Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, so we must be heart smart in all we do to protect our health. In an article in Woman’s Day, they list three things women can do to help protect their heart health everyday.
1. Drink Your Milk. A glass of low fat or fat free milk may help protect against kidney disease, which can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, says a new American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study.
2. Eat Potatoes. The potassium content in potatoes, especially in their skin, may lower blood pressure. So be sure to incorporate some spuds in your diet.
3. Eat Broccoli. A compound in broccoli (sulforaphane) may reverse the damage done to heart blood vessels by diabetes, according to a new study in the journal Diabetes.
Exercise daily and eating healthy are the two best things we as women can do to protect ourselves against heart disease. When it comes to heart healthy recipes always keep in mind: less fat, less sodium and of course, fewer calories. Also, limit foods that contain high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat andchoose instead whole-grains like oats and legumes—which contain beneficial soluble fiber. You’ll also want to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and get some fat from healthy sources like olive and canola oil (which contain monounsaturated fat), as well as nuts, peanut butter, and fish (which provide polyunsaturated fat).
