Acid reflux is a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, or LES does not properly function. Because of this, the LES is unable to keep stomach acid from traveling up into the esophagus and throat. When stomach acid is forced up into the esophagus and throat area, symptoms of acid reflux may occur. Gastroesophageal reflux diseaese, or GERD is common, however, the symptoms may be so severe that they can mimic a heart attack. Symptoms of acid flux include burning in the the chest, burning in the throat, constant throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, and heartburn. In addition, people who suffer from reflux may experience chest pain, sore throat, and have a bad taste in their throat or mouth.
There are certain remedies that can relieve acid reflux. Taking an over the counter antacid medication can be very effective in treating acid reflux symptoms. In addition, over the counter acid reducers are effective as well. Sleeping with the head of the bed elevated is frequently helpful in keeping stomach acid down. The acid reflux sufferer can either put blocks under the head of the bed, or simply prop himself up with a few extra pillows. Eliminating spicy foods, caffeine, chocolate and peppermint can help reduce the incidence of acid reflux. In addition, a thorough medical evaluation should be employed to get proper treatment.
