Our Heart Health and Sugar

A recent study says that Americans consume 355 calories—or 22 teaspoons—of added sugars a day. (Added sugars are those added to food by consumers or manufacturers.) So we know sugar tastes good….but guess what? High consumption of added sugars is linked with increased risks for high blood pressure and high triglyceride levels, risk factors for heart disease.

Recently the AHA recommended limiting added sugars, advising that women eat no more than 100 calories per day from added sugars, or about 6 teaspoons, and men should stick to less than 150 calories, approximately 9 teaspoons. For reference: A 12-ounce can of cola has about 8 teaspoons. (uh-oh.)

It is important to note here that these recommendations apply only to added sugars, which supply calories but no nutritional value, and not to sugars that occur naturally in healthful foods (fructose in fruits, lactose in dairy).

So the next time you go shopping, make sure to check the Nutrition Facts panels on all the food products you put in your shopping cart, which will include natural and added sugars. Check the ingredient list for sugar and all forms of it, such as corn syrup, honey, molasses, etc. And be careful when you think about adding that one extra teaspoon of sugar to your coffee!

5 Heart Healthy Foods You Can Eat

February is American Heart Month. We have all been told that heart disease and stroke is number one killer in the U.S. So it is important, vital really, that we watch our diets and what we eat, as well as exercise regularly.
Doctors have said that a healthy diet can be a key method of preventing heart disease. There are five foods in particular that can help protect your heart health, and while these are not the only heart healthy foods, they are excellent food choices to incorporate in your diet.
1. Garlic: This herb is ideal for heart health. Numerous studies have shown the potential benefits of regular garlic consumption on blood pressure, platelet aggregation, serum triglyceride level, and cholesterol levels – all of which keep your heart performing. Garlic also makes a great seasoning for food so you can greatly reduce salt.
2. Salmon: The average cheeseburger has more than half a day worth of the artery clogging fat, which will increase your risk for a heart attack. Conversely, salmon lowers that risk thanks to heart healthy fats. Omega-3s can prevent erratic heart rhythms, reduce likelihood of blood clots inside arteries, improve the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol, and prevent cholesterol from becoming damaged, at which point it clogs arteries.
3.Berries and Cherries: These yummy fruits are high in polyphenols, which prevent cell damage that creates unhealthy blood vessels and heart. Thawed frozen berries still in their juice and mixed with oatmeal makes an excellent heart-healthy breakfast!
4.Quinoa: is an excellent source of magnesium, the mineral that relaxes blood vessels. Low dietary levels of magnesium lead to health issues like increased rates of hypertension, ischemic heart disease and heart arrhythmias.
5. Hot cocoa: This delicious drink is brimming with antioxidants – two-times more than red wine and three times more than green teas! To cut down on the sugar levels found in hot chocolate mixes, use 100% cocoa and add a tsp. of sugar.

Rhinoplasty Procedure and Health Complications

First of all let me explain what a rhinoplasty procedure is. It is a surgical procedure used to correct the shape of a nose with the goal of improving its look. Rhinoplasty has nothing to do with deviated septum surgery which is done strictly for clearing breathing paths of the nasal area.

I am not sure that people who decide to undergo this surgery are aware of how dangerous it actually is. During rhinoplasty procedure, like any other, a lot of complications can occur. And I bet that neither of us wants to end up with lifelong consequences just because we wanted to improve the look of our nose.

Choosing a surgeon to perform a rhinoplasty procedure on us is very important, or better yet to say crucial. The reason for this is because rhinoplasty procedure besides being technical medical procedure also involves sculpting of the nose. If we let some inexperienced surgeon, who has less than 10 surgeries under his belt, operate on us we are risking the results we surely won’t like.

So, take your time before deciding to go under the knife and research about it because it may save you a lot of time, money and what is the most important of all, health.

Male Rhinoplasty - Is the Surgery Healthy Way to Go?

Recently somebody asked me what I think about cosmetic surgery; specifically about male rhinoplasty since the person who asked me was a man. For the people who do not know what a male rhinoplasty is, it is a nose operation performed on men, with the goal of improving imperfections from aesthetic point of view.

Generally, I do not agree with plastic surgery at all and I find it absolutely unnecessary. First of all, if you are doing it to improve your self esteem I must tell you that there are other much better and reliable ways of doing that. Surgery does not have to be the only choice for you. Second, there are certain health risks associated with such kind of procedures. People who are interested in undergoing this kind of surgery should be informed of such possible dangers. Rhinoplasty recovery lasts for months and it is no always successful and painless.

Therefore I am raising the question about whether male rhinoplasty can be considered safe at all. On the other hand there are always cases of people who took the rhinoplasty procedure and returned with excellent results and had extremely quick recovery. If you think that male rhinoplasty can be a healthy step for you than by all means don’t hesitate to do it, but at least learn more about this procedure.

Best Sources of Protein for Vegetarian and Vegan Diet

Since you are reading this you probably need some information on what are the best sources of protein. Well, firstly it will largely depend on your nutrition. For example, if you are a vegetarian or a vegan (strict vegetarian) you cannot eat animal derived products so you will need to find a good vegetarian protein or vegan protein.

In general the best sources of protein are definitely animal derived foods. In this group you can find meat, chicken, turkey, veal, pork, lamb, eggs and dairy (milk, cheese, and yogurt). But if you are inclined to more strict diet which prohibits these foods than you can turn to other good sources of complete protein like soy, nuts (pistachio, walnuts, almonds, etc), seeds (flax, sesame, pumpkin, etc), grains (brown rice, oats, wheat, bread, etc) and other quality vegetarian protein sources (plant derived foods).

There were a lot of talk about plant foods and how they contain only incomplete proteins, which do not have all the essential amino acids and therefore should be considered not as good for your body as foods with complete proteins. Later studies have shown that plant foods are equally as good, even for people engaged in intensive physical activity.

How Much Protein Per Day Should You Eat?

Answer to the question of how much protein per day should you eat largely depends on two factors. First and most important factor is the activity that you do. If you are just a regular couch potato who is not wasting any calories, in other words, you do not work out than you will need to consume a lot less protein than some person who is regular in sports, not to talk about someone who is training professionally. How much protein per day is needed also depends on how many grams of carbohydrates and fats are you eating per day. It is also important whether you want to lose weight or gain weight.

In a nutshell, for inactive people recommended grams of protein per day is around 1 per kg of body weight. If you are working you may increase protein intake to up to 2 grams per day per kg of body weight but there is absolutely no need to go overboard and waste unnecessary money on more protein than that. There are multiple studies that show that 2 g / day is not much and it won’t cause any liver or kidney failure like many suggest. So you don’t have to worry about that.

SAY NO TO ALCOHOL

Hi friends one of todays biggest necessity of mankind is alcohol. It comes in different types like beer, whiskey, rum etc which are though consumed for fun are not good for health.Actually these are drunk in cold countries to make the body warmer.Sometimes doctors do advice his patients to drink alcohol but in limited quantities. But it is the over consumption of alcohol which leads to serious health mental hazards.Over consumption of alcohol products leads to lung and liver cancer which in turn leads a person to death. In my opinion alcohol could be consumed but in limited quantities.
Another important disadvantage of alcohol is that it is sometimes very costly for a poor man to afford it.But as he has a habit of drinking he could not resist. So he asks for money at his home and if he does not get the money he beats up his wife and children which in a great way creates family violence. So much tension is created n the minds of little children if his or her patent is alcoholic.
Hence in my opinion there should be a control over everything you do in your life and one must responsibly drink alcohol and never ever drink and drive vehicles which causes accident.
