healthy desk dining
August 12th, 2008 by cotton yusonMost of us tend to work hard forget about having a break or even work over lunch times. Despite being too busy and having lots of work to do, one should not forget about his/her health. Lunch breaks gives us the opportunity to pause and connect with our co-workers over some healthy/yummy food. But of course there could be cases that desk dining or eating lunch while working cannot be avoided. We can’t say that this habit is healthy or is our desk a designated eating place.
WebMD provides 7 tips for eating for desk diners who can’t have a break from their pile of work.
1. we should watch what we eat. working and at the same time eating on our desk makes us preoccupied to notice that we are sometimes overeating so its best to pick lunches that are moderately sized and that just enough for you.
2. bring your own lunch. lunch could be a healthy treat specially if you prepare your own food. try to bring in food that has nutrients such as fiber and proteins like chicken and salad. avoid take out lunches that may neither be healthy and over sized and expensive. they also recommend that food should be kept frozen and take only a minimum of 2 hours to get them to you office refrigerator.
3. have some rest pauses and walk around. since you won’t have time to do that over lunch, you won’t get any exercise or physical activity at all which of course is not healthy.
4. disinfect your desks. our desks are not appropriate places to eat, but if we have to so should make sure that it is clean and bacteria-free so as not to contaminate the food we eat. its ideal to disinfect our phone, keyboard and mouse and to avoid touching them while we eat. try to keep a hand sanitizer hand when you can’t wash your hands.
5. eat with a placemat. placemats create a barrier between the food you eat and the bacteria on our tables. plus it would also keep the crumbs from falling all over your desks.
6. invite a friend or colleague or office mate to eat with you on your desk.
7. don’t make it a habit. its okay to be desk lunchers from time to time but we should also get up and join our friends and office mates for real food and bonding even for the short break we get during lunch.
