Clipping Baby’s Nails

July 30th, 2008 by mommyofone

It is really important to keep your baby’s nails trimmed frequently and neatly. Especially as your baby starts crawling and totting around. Having uneven toenails or fingernails can cause a hangnail. These are painful and irritating. Letting the baby’s nails grow out can cause the nail to get snagged or ripped on something and can also injury your child. Start by calming baby and offer a toy that can be played with in one hand. Gently clip one nail at a time, making sure not to go too deep. Be prepared to take breaks in between each finger. Give baby praise for letting you clip her nails after each one. Prevention is key because as your baby is crawling around on the floor, an open sore on the hands and fingers can quickly cause an infection since the baby is in close contact with the billions of germs on the floor. And of course the hands go directly into the baby’s mouth which can lead to serious infections. Keeping baby’s nails trimmed and hands clean are important steps to a healthy baby.
