ADHD & Relation to Obesity In Children
July 7th, 2008 by ffA new study reveals that children who suffer from ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are 50% higher risk of becoming obese if they are not taking medication for the ADHD. The same researchers discovered that those children who were being medicated for ADHD were more likely to be underweight.
The researchers recommend that children with ADHD, both those on and not on medicine, should have their weight consistently monitored. By having their weight gain or weight loss tracked and dealt with on a regular basis, physicians can help prevent any health problems related to being overweight and underweight.
Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, says that because obesity and ADHD are common among children it is likely that there would be an overlap of the two conditions.
