Home Remedy for insect bites, cuts, and scrapes

July 31, 2008 by mother_goose

We all get our fair share of cuts, scrapes, and insect bites everyday. Our kids especially, because of their curiosity and activeness. But we only go to the doctor for treatment of major injuries. For minor ones, it is better if we know a little of first aid and home remedies.

For insect bites, apply cold treatment immediately to alleviate the swelling. Take pain reliever if the person feels pain. Apply calamine lotion to alleviate itching. In cases of fainting due to insect bites, bring the patient to the emergency room.

For cuts and scrapes, thoroughly wash the wound with soap and water. Use over the counter hydrogen peroxide or betadine to flush out bacteria in the wound to prevent further infection. Cover with bandaid.

Got Stress?

If you are feeling stressed these days, get some food into your body that will help fight the effects of extra stress. Before reaching for that extra doughnut or candy bar to ease your worries, try some of these food choices:

Oranges

Studies have shown that people who eat oranges before giving a speech have lower levels of cortisol, and lower blood pressure than those those who don’t. So feel the stress heating up–take a break and peel an orange!

Mixed Nuts

Keep some of these in a bowl nearby.  Grab a handful when you are stressing out and you will be helping your body replace B vitamins which stress depletes very quickly. B Vitamins are needed to maintain nerve and brain cells. Walnuts give you lots of all-importat of zinc, and almonds will give you Vitamin E which helps fight cellular damage linked to chronic stress.

Dark Chocolate

This is just too much of a stress reliever to really give up, but just make sure you grab dark chocolate wen you are craving a chocolate fix!  Just eating that litle taste of heaven makes most of us feel a bit better on tough days, and the the antioxidant flavonoids in it are potent enough to fight cancer and heart disease, so you have to figure they’ve got to be able to temper tension’s effects.

Healthy Summer Dishes

Summer is upon us, and many families are looking for quick healthy and satisfying meals to prepare during the day. These two recipes are guaranteed to lighten the load of cooking a heavy meal.

The first recipe is Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps. You will need one pound of boneless, skinless chicken, one ten ounce bag of shredded carrots, scallions, cilantro leaves, large lettuce leaves, lime wedges and ½ cup jarred sweet chili sauce (found in the Asian aisle or nearest Asian grocery store).

To prepare the filling, slice the chicken into one-inch pieces and fry in a pan with the carrots and a few sliced scallions. When the chickens is fully cooked (5-6 minutes) remove from heat and add half a cup fresh cilantro leaves. Once everything is mixed, pour the sweet chili sauce over the filling. To serve, place approximately a half a cup of the chicken filling with a lime wedge on the side. This dish is simply refreshingly healthy and delicious.

The second recipe is Grilled Tuna and Artichoke Salad. You will need a one pound ½ inch thick tuna steak, fat-free Italian dressing, a bag of mixed baby greens, one 14 once can of water-packed artichokes, one can of roasted red peppers (not packed in oil), and four lemon wedges. To prepare, cook tuna until brown but still pink in the center (2-3 minutes on each side. Let cool for about five minutes. Meanwhile, toss greens, quartered artichokes, and red peppers. To serve, place tuna over the tossed salad and drizzle with dressing.

These recipes are quick, easy and most of all healthy. Enjoy!

Diaper Rash

Most infants will develop diaper rash at one time or another. It is painful for the baby and can be very frustrating for the parents. Diaper rash often seems to pop up out of nowhere and it can quickly turn to a nasty rash. Most rashes can be taken care of with persistence and some over-the-counter medications. Let your baby air out as much as possible and don’t use any oils or soaps that can further irritate the skin. Petroleum jelly is a time tested treatment as it helps to prevent any moisture from getting on the irritated skin. Zinc also works really and can be found in most over-the-counter medicines, such as A&D, ButtPaste, and Desitin. Some rashes will require a doctor’s attention. Keep a close eye on your baby and use your best judgment. If baby develops any boils or develops a fever, take your baby to the doctor right away. It is also important to find the cause of the rash. If you use cloth diapers, make sure to do an extra rinse or strip the diapers. You may also want to switch detergents to Allen’s or Purex Free and Clear. If you use disposables, make sure the diaper is not on tightly. If you are using cloth, you may consider temporarily switching to disposables because they pull the moisture away from the skin. It is also more convenient, especially if you are dealing with constant diarrhea.

Clipping Baby’s Nails

It is really important to keep your baby’s nails trimmed frequently and neatly. Especially as your baby starts crawling and totting around. Having uneven toenails or fingernails can cause a hangnail. These are painful and irritating. Letting the baby’s nails grow out can cause the nail to get snagged or ripped on something and can also injury your child. Start by calming baby and offer a toy that can be played with in one hand. Gently clip one nail at a time, making sure not to go too deep. Be prepared to take breaks in between each finger. Give baby praise for letting you clip her nails after each one. Prevention is key because as your baby is crawling around on the floor, an open sore on the hands and fingers can quickly cause an infection since the baby is in close contact with the billions of germs on the floor. And of course the hands go directly into the baby’s mouth which can lead to serious infections. Keeping baby’s nails trimmed and hands clean are important steps to a healthy baby.
