Menstrual Migraines

June 3rd, 2008 by ff

All of the symptoms that come along with having a menstrual cycle every month makes being a woman really hard at times. The first week of June (June 1st - 7th) is National Headache Awareness Week so what better time than to talk about menstrual headaches and/or migraines.

I have headaches all of the time and I am on pain pills daily due to severe headache pain due to Fibromyalgia. But when it is getting close to my menstrual cycle, especially the week before, my headaches take on a whole new meaning and make life really unbearable. Women suffer from migraines approximately three times more than men according to the National Headache Foundation. Menstrual migraines affect 60% of these women. Menstrual migraines occur before, during or immediately after their period, or during ovulation. They are primarily caused by fluctuating levels of estrogen. Women who take birth control pills may suffer more from menstrual migraines since oral contraceptives influence estrogen levels.
