Dyslexia:What is it?
May 5th, 2008 by Pinaki GoswamiDyslexia is a disorder where a child has specific problems related to learning words, spellings and - at times-numbers, the question that arises is how to deal with it. Probably all of us will say with patience, love and blah, blah, blah….But it’s always easier said than done. The first and the foremost thing is to get it diagnosed. You need to understand and demystify the reason behind your child being a slow learner. And you must know how to live with it. Some child has outstanding capabilities doesn’t mean that even your kid is gifted. Face it and live with it!
By-pass strategy: After a visit to your doctor, if it is established that your kid is indeed dyslexic, what’s the next step? First, try alternative methods of teaching. If he fears numbers and words, bring up learning aids. Like, if he’s scared of calculations, give him a calculator. If he finds that the letters in his books are dancing, give him a word precessor. But the fact is that the best strategy to help your child cope is to spend quality time with him.
What’s next?
The problem is initially limited to words and numbers but, if you ignore it, it will only a aggravated and become much more complex. And, then you will find it much tougher to resolve it. So, observe your child. figure out his problems and help him overcome them, with patience.
