Bee Sting: Home Remedy for Itching & Redness

April 21st, 2008 by Kathy Dove

I’ve had an allergy to bee stings since I was a child. Fortunately, I’ve never had a life-threatening reaction, but have had some pretty bad symptoms. The summer I stepped on a bee, my foot itched for about a month and that was after the swelling and redness went away.

Last summer I got stung on my thigh while trimming hedges. Those little suckers are sneaky and were hiding where I couldn’t see them, nor their nest.

At first I thought the reaction was going to be very mild, but after about an hour, I had a red circle about eight inches in diameter.  Since I prefer natural remedies and had heard that black cohosh may help with reactions from bee stings, I gave it a try.

I made a paste of black cohosh (in powder form) and water. It wasn’t a pretty sight, but by the next morning all redness and itching disappeared completely. This has never happened in my life. I always had some visible reaction for at least a couple of days, if not weeks after a bee sting.

For some people, bee stings can be deadly. You should always talk to your physician about what treatment to follow, but if you don’t have severe reactions, you might want to try black cohosh. I’m convinced!
