April 13th, 2008 by J GHaving a baby brings indescribable joy to a new mother’s life. That feeling of elation can be interrupted by post postpartum depression or baby blues. Recent studies suggest that at least one in five American women experience some sort of postpartum depression.
As daunting as the baby blues can be, you can brighten your mood with just a little physical activity each week. You can do this by taking a walk every day or by engaging in sports. Even simple household chores like scrubbing the shower tile or sweeping the floor is beneficial.
According to a new study, just 20 minutes a week of physical activity a week will do the trick. The study analyzed the level of activity of 20,000 men and women and their corresponding levels of psychological distress. It found that those who regularly engaged in activities like walking, gardening or sports had a 41 percent lower risk for depression.
So whenever you are feeling down, whether it’s do to the baby blues or not, go take a walk or do some gardening. That will get your blood flowing and you’ll soon feel better. It’s also a good way to clear your mind and don’t be surprised if you suddenly find solutions to the problems that may be bothering you.
