Building Your Child’s Self-Image

December 23rd, 2007 by Joyce Priddy

Your child’s self-image is extremely important. It is through life that your child will look in the mirror on a daily basis. How your child learns to look at the mirror image and what they see as reality when they are adults can be greatly affected with how you help them develop their self-image as a child.

What is self image? Self image is how you see yourself in the mirror. It is your reality of what the mind interprets what is in the mirror. For example, someone might be obese but look in the mirror and see themselves as only a little over-weight. Someone else might have lots of grey and white hairs but look in the mirror and only notice a few. What the rest of the world sees and what we perceive in the mirror are often not exactly the same.

One of the important methods to increase your child’s positive self-image is to emphasize the good things about their physical features. Compliment how well that they did their hair that day. Talk about how a certain outfit makes them look so slim. Focus on helping your child to see the good things about their body and to view their bodies as attractive and healthy. This will enable them to have a stronger self-image when they are adults.
