Vegan Diet Can Reverse Symptoms of Diabetes

Researchers found that people who ate a more Vegan type diet could reverse the symptoms of Diabetes. Patients who tried this lowered their blood sugar and lost more weight than those who didn’t.

Doctors believe that a diet change should be tried first before patients opt for or are given medication because it could be healthier in the long run.

Smoking Reduces the Effects of Alcohol

In one experimental research, scientists have discovered that smoking cigarettes may lead to more drinking. The nicotine in cigarettes tend to lower the effects that people would usually feel enabling them to drink more than they normally would if they were not smoking.

“Since the desired effect of alcohol is significantly diminished by nicotine — particularly among heavy or binge drinkers such as college students — this may encourage drinkers to drink more to achieve the pleasurable or expected effect,” said Wei-Jung Chen, from the Texas A and M University Health Science Center in College Station, who led the reeearch.

“In other words, cigarette smoking appears to promote the consumption of alcohol.”

Over Weight Patients Might Not Be Fit For Technology

As the years roll by and technology excels doctors are relying on more technical diagnosis given by medical machinery such as MRI’s, computed tomography, and X-Rays. However with millions of Americans becoming more and more over weight, some cannot fit into these machines and those that can, may not recieve a great diagnosis because of fuzzy and unreadable scans due to extra layers of fat.

The number of inconclusive scans have almost doubled in 15 years from 0.10% to 0.19%.

Windy City Talks of Banning Trans

A Chicago alderman is floating a proposal to make it illegal for city restaurants to use trans fats, the partially hydrogenated cooking oils that are linked to clogged arteries and heart attacks.

Edward Burke, a longtime council member, says children need to be protected from unhealthy, fatty foods and that the city, named the fattest in the nation by Men’s Fitness, needs all the help it can get to slim down.

Mayor Richard M. Daley, along with many others, wonder if the council shouldn’t have bigger priorities than legislating what Chicagoans eat.

But trans is a big problem, not just in the Midwest. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has recently sued chicken slinger KFC for using trans fats in many of its products, some of which give you more trans fat in a meal than it’s considered safe to eat in a week.

It’s clear that there’s a nutritional crisis in this country, and according to another Chicago story, the battle lines are being drawn along ethnic lines. A new study of the city shows that it is full of “food deserts” where fast food restaurants are plentiful but grocery stores are scarce, limiting residents’ abilties to make healthy choices. Most of these deserts are located on the south and west sides of the city, where many blacks live.

This lack of choice indicates that people living in those areas will be more likely to die from diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart problems than more affluent city dwellers or those with more choices.

The study found that in many of these neighborhoods, the distance to a grocery store was about twice as far as the distance to a fast food restaurant. More than half a million residents live in food deserts.

Banning trans fat might not be the answer, but it seems something needs to be done from a public health standpoint to make it easier for poor people especially, but really all people, to make good food choices.

Yummy Dessert Recipes From Chefs

When I tried the Atkins diet a few years ago, one of the things that annoyed me were the lack of good Desserts that I could have, especially in the earlier parts of the diet. Besides the Atkins, even regular diets are hard to have a snack on. Which is why many end of breaking down and binging, ruining the diet. Here are a few healthy dessert recipes for you:

The High Cost of Cancer

Today’s must-read is from USA Today, which reports that the cost of cancer drugs has skyrocketed, even compared to the rising cost of other types of drugs.

The cost of cancer drugs rose 16 percent last year, compared to a 3 percent rise for other kinds of prescription drugs. The newer drug therapies tend to be the most expensive, with some costing around $10,000 a month.

The high cost comes with some benefit, though, as the more expensive drugs also tend to prolong life. A handy little chart with this story says that the drugs available in 1996 to treat advanced colorectal cancer cost $500 and usually allowed the patient to live 11 months. The current drugs cost $250,000 and give the patient two years on average.

Drug companies say they have to make profits, and they aren’t out to take advantage of patients with life-threatening illnesses. They also say they give away billions of dollars in drugs to uninsured people who need them. Well, that makes me feel a lot better.

We The Guinea Pig

Are you aware that if you are in a very bad car accident and needed blood that you could not be given the real thing? I certainly was not aware of this fact until I watched the latest episode of 20/20.

A company called Northfield Labs who seems oblivious to human rights were given permission two years ago to run with their experiment. It is a new experimental blood substitute called Polyheme. It goes like this; Accident, then paramedics. Once you are in the ambulance, the paramedic opens a prepackaged envelope that is sort of a lottery game. Depending on what it says they will give you the clear liquid IV or the fake blood. All without informing you of a thing. You could bypass this of course if you were wearing a blue wrist band that said you did not want to be one of their guinea pigs.

However it’s funny about the wrist band considering probably 90% of us have never heard of the program so how in the heck are we supposed to be wearing the wristband? Also once they give you the black man-made whatever the heck it is, they must give it to you for 12 straight hours so you can’t even expect to get real blood once you reach the hospital. After that a family member must ask to put you on human blood, if you not, ie. coma patient. Once again, how can they if they have no idea you are being given an experimental liquid?

This could be a new breakthrough in health and science and I’m sure organ transplants were viewed as weird when first brought up but the key thing here is that we have no say with what they do to us. That is the very definition of unethical, but the company can’t seem to understand and neither does the FDA.

Sleep For Our Health

July 4, 2006 by Marsha James

Studies keep showing that a vast majority of Americans get by on 5 hours or less sleep a night and even teenagers in highschool are no different. This is bad because your body needs time to rest and a full 8 hours or more is what our body expects and needs.

Everyone says that they are far too busy to sleep but we should be less busy in these times because unlike years ago, we have faster cars, public transportation, airplanes instead of horses or boats which takes hours to months to reach one destination.

We also have washing machines, stoves and a slew of other machinery that make life easier for us. Not that many seem to notice that. So we should set some time aside just for us to get a better night sleep.
